Equation 22 · Part 1 · A Strained Crystal Is a Designer Spacetime

Symbol e^2

2e2/h2e^2/h
e2e^2

What this part means

The square of e: multiply e by itself.

Its job in the formula

e2e^2 is squared: multiply the underlying quantity by itself. The square is a mathematical operation, not a second independent variable.

The passage around this formula

The cheapest of the three needs no such cooling at all. Christophe De Beule and collaborators showed that a slowly varying tilt horizon transmits carriers through Hawking-like thermal channels, and that the effect shows up as a peak in the ordinary two-terminal differential conductance, of order 2e2e^2/h per conducting mode, whose position tracks the strain-set tilt slope directly [ 4 ] . Because the peak is a property of how carriers transmit through the tipped cone rather than a property of thermal equilibrium, it is present as soon as the horizon exists, with no requirement to cool below the analog Hawking temperature — the signature a first, warmer device should chase.

Learn the underlying idea

An exponent tells how a base is used in multiplication. In x³, x is the base and 3 is the exponent: x³ = x × x × x.
