The Steam Engine Watt Didn't Invent. He Fixed Its Worst Flaw.

Newcomen's atmospheric engine had pumped mine water for over fifty years before Watt touched it. His 1769 patent fixed one specific waste — and that narrow fix, not a new engine, made steam a general industrial power source.
