Equation 6 · Part 1 · The Vacuum Has a History: Symmetry Breaking as Speciation

Symbol mu^2

μ2<0\mu^2 < 0
μ2\mu^2

What this part means

mu2u^2 is squared: multiply the underlying quantity by itself. The square is a mathematical operation, not a second independent variable.

Its job in the formula

mu2u^2 is squared: multiply the underlying quantity by itself. The square is a mathematical operation, not a second independent variable.

The passage around this formula

. The sign of the mass term is the entire mechanism. With μ2\mu^2 < 0 the origin would be the unique minimum and there would be nothing to discuss; it is the negative mass-squared term, an assumption built into the Standard Model’s Higgs sector rather than derived from a deeper principle, that manufactures the trough in the first place. Nothing in the Lagrangian singles out any point on that trough. A system placed at the unstable summit will roll downhill in a direction fixed only by whatever infinitesimal fluctuation happens to nudge it first, and the direction it lands on becomes, from that moment, the vacuum every subsequent measurement will be made against.

An exponent tells how a base is used in multiplication. In x³, x is the base and 3 is the exponent: x³ = x × x × x.
