Equation 3 · Part 1 · How Planetary Science and Exploration Actually Work
Symbol r^2
What this part means
The square of r: multiply r by itself.
Its job in the formula
is squared: multiply the underlying quantity by itself. The square is a mathematical operation, not a second independent variable.

The passage around this formula
Gravity. A planet’s external gravity field is not sensed with a gravimeter sitting on the planet; it is read off the motion of an orbiting or flying-by spacecraft, whose trajectory bends in response to mass distribution beneath it. In practice this means tracking the spacecraft’s radio carrier signal from Earth and measuring its Doppler shift with extreme precision as the spacecraft accelerates and decelerates along its orbit. A denser, non-uniformly distributed interior produces small, characteristic deviations from a simple point-mass orbit, expressed as gravity harmonics ( , , and higher terms) layered on top of the dominant 1/ term. From those harmonics and the body’s known…
Learn the underlying idea
An exponent tells how a base is used in multiplication. In x³, x is the base and 3 is the exponent: x³ = x × x × x.
